Day 74 - Monday, June 3, 1974 - Black Rock Leanto to High Top Leanto

21.1 miles - 591.6 cumulative miles

Ah, such a lovely day in spring!  We got up a bit late today, but it was nice out.  Promised to be  a great day.  Started hiking about 8:45.

Had an interesting time last night.  There was this big raccoon hanging around the shelter all night long, trying to get at things.  He stole a few things right from inside the shelter.  A skunk also joined him for a while.  One of them tried to take off with my wineskin.  They kept us up most of the night.

Anyhow, we got started this morning and hiked up to the Black Rocks - a big pile of rocks with a fantastic view.  There were clouds all over the place, with mountains showing through occasionally.

We went on to Loft Mountain Campground where we stopped at the store and got a few extra supplies and had lunch.  Had an orange - tasted wonderful!  Saw a deer grazing in a field outside of the Campground.  Also saw two deer this morning on the trail.

Along a nature trail that followed the AT through Loft Mtn Campground

Went on and on to the Ranger Headquarters.  Got a new permit.  From there, at 5PM, we pushed on 6 more miles to High Top Shelter.  Boy were we ever tired.  Lots of climbing in the last 6 miles.  There were 3 people at the shelter and one camped out behind it.  We got supper and decided to be bad and use the shelter.  Had no desire to set the tent up.
