Day 75 - Tuesday, June 4, 1974 - High Top Leanto to Bear Fence Leanto

12.7 miles - 604.3 cumulative miles

Bear Fence Shelter

I woke up early this morning and Rick soon followed.  I finished reading "Serpico" in the meantime.  Had breakfast and left around 8:30.

Not a deer - but interesting, anyway.

Heavy dew this morning.  Walking wasn't easy with my toe bothering me [I had stubbed my little toe yesterday at the shelter].  We came across a deer grazing right next to the trail.  It didn't move until we were right next to it, and even then it didn't run away, just hopped a few feet away and kept right on grazing, while we got cameras out and took pictures.

South River Waterfall

Stopped at a shelter for lunch.  Afterwards we split up.  I went down to the South River waterfall, doing an extra 3.7 miles, round-trip.  Great falls.  Rick went on along the AT.  I got to the shelter at 6PM, he got there at 4:30.  As I was approaching the Lewis Mountain Campground shortly before Bear Fence Shelter, I scared a guy who had been out gathering fire wood.  He was walking along the trail in front of me carrying a hatchet and an armload of wood.  I guess he heard me walking up behind him and turned with the hatchet ready to attack.  Must have thought I was a bear or something.
