Day 77 - Thursday, June 6, 1974 - Big Meadows Campground to Pass Mountain Leanto

18.4 miles - 630.6 cumulative miles

Sunrise at Big Meadows Campground

I woke up at sunrise and man was it good.  A perfect view from the campground across the gap to Hawksbill Mountain, with clouds and fog rolling over the mountains.  Beautiful.

We went to the lodge for breakfast which was freaky.  There was a whole gang of older men there, like a convention of some kind.  And us, two AT hikers...

Left the campground around 9AM and hiked slow and easy all day.  I really got into taking my time which I know I should do all the time.  We stopped at Skyland for lunch.  Passed some horse stables there.  Had a big Chef's Salad.  Real good.  Went on and on with fantastic views all day.  It was what you'd call a partly sunny day, or mostly sunny at least.  The sun was out most of the time but every once in a while some threatening looking clouds would invade.  There were fluffy clouds around all day long.  Made for some real nice scenery.

Passed lots of hikers going south on short hikes.  Stopped at Byrd's Nest No. 3 Shelter around 5PM to rest our feet.  Met another northbound Thru-hiker there.  Had been following our names in the registers.  We went on to Panorama restaurant for dinner.  Ate out all 3 meals today!

Thornton Gap

Hiked on to the shelter 1 1/2 miles up the mountain after dinner.  Was visited by a Raccoon while picking my things up to bring to the tent.  Followed me to the tent expecting to be fed, I guess.  Pretty tame.  Saw a wild turkey today right next  to the trail as I walked by.  He just walked away into the woods.  Missed getting a picture.
