11.0 miles - 63.7 cumulative miles
Left the motel about 9:00 and started hitching up to Unicoi Gap. Got a ride from a town employee who only took us about a mile. Walked a ways up and then a guy in a VW Bug stopped and took us up to the Gap. Started climbing at about 10:00. Hiked to the first shelter in pretty good condition. Nice new shelter. Tray Mountain. Had lunch and decided to continue the remaining 6 miles to Addis Gap Lean-to. I did okay today with my feet. A few more sore spots. I had moleskin all over my feet, just in case. Today my knee was hurting pretty bad, mostly going up hill or down hill. Not so bad on level trail and not so bad without my pack on. My pack is too heavy. Rick's knees have been bothering him today, too. He says he's also been dizzy all day.
I was so involved in worrying about the aches and pains and blisters that I missed a lot of the scenery along the trail. There were some fantastic views. The weather was perfect all day. Addis Gap Lean-to is really quite nice. The bunks are all filled with hay and there is a really fine stream with cold clear water flowing by. Nice tall pines trees all around. A cozy spot, though a bit lonely.
[Talk about a couple of wrecks. What did we expect, carrying 50-60 pounds on the surprisingly tough trail in Georgia. And this was before there was light weight gear. We were carrying lots of cotton and wool and heavy shoes and that heavy SLR film camera with 2 lenses, and who knows what else. Not a pretty picture.]
