Day 26 - Tuesday, April 16, 1974 - Tri-Corner Knob Shelter to Cosby Knob Shelter

7.6 miles - 195.0 cumulative miles

Cosby Knob Shelter on a lazy afternoon

Started out late today, about 10:00.  Beautiful morning.  Had a full house last night.  The volunteer ranger at the shelter showed everyone how to make sour dough.  Made some biscuits, too.  Had a teacher at a Junior College in New York and one of his former students.  Also a guy named Leo that we had met in Fontana Village who is photographing the trail for a new edition of Ed Garvey's book.  One other guy arrived late, and since there was no room left for him, he went down to the primitive campsite near by.

Grassy bald where we soaked up the sun for an hour.

Had a fantastic hike today.  The weather was beautiful, sunny and not too warm.  We stopped after about 3 miles on a grassy bald on the ridge with a fantastic view to the east.  The sun was fantastically warm and we sat there for an hour just soaking it in.  Wanted to stay there all day.  It was great, only 7 1/2 miles and most of it down hill.  Got to the shelter around 2:30 and the teacher was here.  Passed his friend on the trail having lunch.  Nice shelter.  Clean.  Had a visit from a bunch of guys from the campground down the mountain with lots of food.  Gave us sandwiches, cookies, potato chips.  They also had some beer, but didn't have any for us.  We sat around all afternoon taking pictures, eating, reading, writing, etc. Two other guys and 3 young kids staying here tonight.  Our first non-full shelter in the Smokies.  Our last night in the Smokies.

A couple of shots that may or may not have been taken on this day, but they needed to go somewhere.
