Day 20 - Wednesday, April 10, 1974 - Fontana Village to Russel Field Shelter

14.1 miles - 146.4 cumulative miles

Fontana Lake with Dogwood

Got up at 7 AM.  Packed up and went down to the cafeteria for breakfast after checking out.  Bought film and started walking down the road to Fontana Dam.  Got no rides so ended up walking 2-2 1/2 miles then 1 1/2 miles to the dam and across the dam (the trail route runs across the top of the dam).  Finally started our 12 miles to the shelter at 11:00AM.  Two other guys came up behind us at the dam going to the same shelter.  Started climbing 4 miles to fire tower on Shuckstack Mountain.  Fantastic view.  The weather couldn't have been nicer.  Clear, sunny, not too warm or too cool.  Perfect.  Could see views in all directions.  Went on to first shelter and had lunch.  Pushed on at about 3:00 and reached Mollies Ridge shelter at about 5:45 and then hiked 2 rough miles to our shelter, Russel Field.  Last ones there.  Nearly full.  Arrived at almost 7PM.  Cooked supper.  Two guys from Cape Cod here - Barry and Joe.  One of them had seen a wild boar just before getting to the shelter.  Rick's Achilles tendon is getting worse.  Gigantic bump.  Bothering him more.

Rick on Fontana Dam.  We used pictures like this as codes to number rolls of film in sequential order, not only for us but also for the folks back home who were receiving the slides.  This was a way of letting them at least see what we were seeing and doing along the trail.  Not exactly instant digital media!
