Day 28 - Thursday, April 18, 1974 - Groundhog Creek Lean-to to Walnut Mountain Lean-to

10.4 miles - 223 cumulative miles

Sunset from Walnut Mountain

Got up late, around 8:00.  It was a nice clear, sunny day, luckily.  Took our time getting breakfast and getting packed and going.  Left around 10:00.  Leo was still in his bag making coffee on his stove.  He's taking it slow and easy and very relaxed.

Views from Max Patch Bald

The trail now goes directly over the Bald

Bud-man

Hiked up and down quite a bit today.  Got to Max Patch Road and climbed the big bald mountain there (Max Patch Bald).  It's just a completely grass covered hill with views in all directions.  Spent awhile hanging around up there, taking pictures and just enjoying the sun and views.  Went 4 miles down Max Patch Road, past old weathered farm houses and barns.  Saw a gigantic turkey in one front yard and a pig in another.  The road hiking was pretty horrible.  Didn't much enjoy it.

The Walnut Creek Lean-to is an old CCC built one from 1938, with a wire fence all around.  But it's really nice.  Leo is here with us again, and another guy who's hiking to Maine.  He went from Davenport Gap today, 20 miles.  Expects to finish by the end of July.

May get a good sunset tonight.  Nice view from the mountain top field near the shelter.
