| The only picture taken today. Too much rain. |
Woke up this morning to rain, as expected from the looks of the clouds at sunset yesterday. So we didn't get our early start as we hoped. After we ate breakfast it started clearing, so we started hiking about 9:45. It wasn't long before it began to cloud over again and when we reached the top of Wesser Bald it started to rain. After a long descent during which we both slipped and fell on the mud, we had lunch at the Wesser Creek Lean-to. The descent was really impressive. There were the small beginnings of streams with waterfalls all over the place and we kept crossing these and following them down as they grew and all eventually went into forming the quite large Wesser Creek. And all around on both sides were steep mountains or cliffs making a very narrow wooded valley. Really beautiful and I can just imagine how nice it would have been in good weather. This is one spot I will have to return to some day and spend some time at.
As we finished lunch it started to rain and thunder. So we got good and soaked again between the lean-to and the town of Wesser. We checked into the motel and checked out the store across the street. Naturally it began to clear up right after we checked in. We could have gone on another 6 miles to Sassafras Gap and have only 14 miles to the next shelter and then only 3 miles to Fontana Village.
