[No pictures - town day]
Got up around 7:30 and went to breakfast, the laundromat, the grocery store. Got packed up and went to camping supply store and found their packs were too small to fit on Rick's frame. So we came back to the motel and sat out front and wrote letters. Rick called the place in Asheville. No luck. Asked for a pack to be ordered from home from EMS and to have it sent to us. Also asked for money - we will need it.
Started out for the park, had lunch and then started hitching. A mile up the road someone stopped for us, got out with a can of beer in his hand and a park ranger pulled up. Told us not to hitchhike in the park and gave the guy a warning. Real bummer. Went to the park headquarters for a permit. No luck tonight, everything is full (after all, it is Easter weekend). So we went back to the motel and spent more money. Walked around window shopping and found some Easter candy for ourselves.
Have a permit starting tomorrow night: 6 miles, 9 miles, 7 miles and 7 miles. Then it is 30 miles to Hot Springs after we leave the park. Only problem now is getting up to Newfound Gap.
Hi Peter, We're in Gatlinburg right now! Snow up in the passes, rain today, but 2 days of sunshine ahead. Hiked Chimney Tops and Alum Cave trail to Peregrine Peak... Fly on down....Liz & Neil
