Day 21 - Thursday, April 11, 1974 - Russel Field Shelter to Derrick Knob Shelter

8.3 miles - 154.7 cumulative miles

I had a rough night last night.  Kept hoping for morning but it never seemed to come.  The bunks weren't too great for comfort.  Got going in the morning quite late - didn't leave until 9:45 or so.  Only 8 miles today, and we crossed all kinds of balds and fields and exposed mountain tops where the wind was blowing so hard that it almost blew us over.  Had a hard time.  But the views were great.  It was a little hazy, but we could still see a long way.  Hiked slow and easy most of the day, with a couple of long breaks.  Met a guy who's hiking through the Smokies in 11 days.  Real slow.  Sort of inspired us to take it more easy and to stop rushing so [not that we were really rushing].  Ended up with 12 guys in the shelter last night.  At least 10 tonight so far.  Got a long hard hike tomorrow with lots of climbing.  Had a Lipton chicken dinner tonight.  Beef Strogonoff last night.  We are not eating to poorly.
