Day 24 - Sunday, April 14, 1974 - Newfound Gap to False Gap Shelter

6.4 miles - 178.6 cumulative miles

False Gap Shelter

Woke up about 7:30 and went to breakfast at a pancake house.  Very crowded.  Afterwards we went up the Sky Lift and looked around.  Nice views.  Then we went back to the motel and paid our bill.  The owner offered to give us a ride at least part of the way up to Newfound Gap.  Took us all the way.  He is from Ohio originally and is really into the mountains.  Loves them but can't get out too much, working in his motel.  Does a lot of hiking when he can.  First thing at the gap a ranger walked up and asked for our permit.  Hew was an older man and he was very friendly.  Talked a while about the trail, our hike, permits, and strange people in the gap (tourists who run around looking for telephones and coke machines).  While we were there at the gap we were approached by a few groups of tourists asking about our hike.  They were all so thrilled to hear about it.

In Newfound Gap
We started hiking and climbed for 1 1/2 miles.  Stopped at Ice Water Springs Shelter for lunch.  Met our Canadian friend again.  He was headed back to the gap - having more trouble with his heel.  Went on over the ridges of the Sawteeth.  Stopped at Charlies Bunion.  Fantastic views.  Were talking with a couple from Scotland.  They were very interested in our hike.  Took a picture of us.  Went on to the shelter.  False Gap Shelter is way down off the trail - the hardest section of our hike all day.  Water inside shelter floor from a spring.  Cold and damp.  Filled already with our arrival.  More people expected.  We started hiking about 11:30 and arrived at 4pm.  Weather was mostly cloudy with some sun.  Warm, no rain.  Chance of good weather for 2 days.
