Got up around 7 again and there, outside, was fog and rain and wind. Rotten. Didn't sleep too well last night. Was sleeping on a corrugated piece of aluminum on a wire bunk. Not too comfortable. Had to borrow a stove to cook on last night. Had none this morning. Had granola and milk for breakfast. Beef Stroganof last night and coconut cream pudding.
Started out at 8:30 through the fog. Missed a whole lot of nice scenery today because of the weather. Climbed a couple of big balds, the last of which was pure misery. Kept climbing, couldn't see through the fog and the wind was blowing hard, probably about 50 mph. It was terrible. Thought I'd never reach the top. Came across a bunch of cows on the trail at one spot after the balds. Had to chase then out of my way. After a very unenjoyable 8 miles I found Rick waiting for me in front of the Pink Winters house [someone mentioned in Ed Garvey's book]. Walked to the road and had a snack at a restaurant there, then walked 1 1/2 miles to Elk Park and the Trivett House. Real nice place, like home.
Went down to the Time Square Restaurant for a late lunch. Did shopping and talked to the postmaster. Real friendly. Ran into Paul C who we met while staying over at Spring Mountain Shelter back aways. He's slowing up now, taking it easy. Expecting to skip the middle four states and do New England.
Got our $50, guidebooks, and some Hobo Bread from home. Making some citadel spread tonight in the Trivett's kitchen (peanut butter, bacon grease, honey, powdered milk - yum). Leo and Rick and Louise didn't show up tonight. We may layover another night here, especially if it rains.
