Day 43 - Friday, May 3, 1974 - Elk Park, NC to Moreland Gap Leanto

10.3 miles - 347.1 cumulative miles

Moreland Gap Leanto.  Note the trash pile on the left and the graffiti.

Got up and had another fantastic breakfast with the whole gang at the Trivetts.  Real nice.  Got things ready to go and left around 9:00.  Stopped at the post office and mailed some things and then walked to the trail.  Had a real nice hike today.  Mostly on roads but really fantastic views of Roan Mountain and the balds, etc.  Lots of fine farm land with cows and horses and green fields and yellow flowers, blue sky, white clouds, fences and all.

We decided to stay at Moreland Gap shelter because Rick was getting sore feet.  So we didn't push on to the gorge.  Hope it's real nice tomorrow for that.  May try calling the post office in Hampton to see if we can arrange something there, if not we will have the money forwarded to Damascus and try to borrow some from someone to get our supplies.  We do have about $12 now.  May be enough.

Full house tonight in the shelter.  The whole gang from the Trivetts is here.  Had dirt bikers entertain us on the trail in front of the shelter this evening.  Birds singing now at dusk.  Wood Thrushes.  Had cream tuna on noodles, coconut cream pudding and Hobo Bread with Russian tea.  Requests for Hobo Bread recipe.
