Day 55 - Wednesday, May 15, 1974 - Damascus, VA to Pearisburg, VA

0.0 miles

My throat is showing signs of improvement today.  It was a bit better this morning, though I had trouble eating breakfast, but as the day went on the soreness decreased, thank goodness.

We had a sudden idea to take a trip to Cape Hatteras or some place on the coast this morning, trying to relieve our boredom and getting sick of Damascus.  So we convinced ourselves we could do it with the money we had and we grabbed a bus to Boone, NC to pick up a connection to the coast.  After getting to Boone though, I had second thoughts and I figured it would never work.  And it wouldn't have.  We couldn't have rented a car when we got there like we planned because you have to be 25 to qualify.

So we got on a bus to Johnson City, TN where we had to wait 2 or 3 hours for a bus to Roanoke and then we jumped on a bus to Pearisburg. We left Damascus at 1:50PM, left Boone at 5PM, left Johnson City at 10PM, left Roanoke at 1AM, and got to Pearisburg at 2:30AM.

While waiting at Johnson City we decided to make a big change in our plans.  We are going to hike through to Harpers Ferry and then go on up to Connecticut and do New England.  Also we want to do the whole 260 miles of the Long Trail in Vermont, 100 miles of which coincides with the Appalachian Trail.
