Day 61 - Tuesday, May 21, 1974 - Thunderhill Leanto to Snowden VA to Lynchburg, VA

14.8 miles - 464.1 cumulative miles

James River

Had a really enjoyable day today.  Saw some great views to the west from a couple of spots near Thunderhill.  Real pleasant trail most of the way.  Rough climb up a couple of mountains then a steep and gradual descent to Marble Springs Shelter for lunch.  Saw a turtle on the way.  Saw a note from Joe H.  Was bitten by a dog outside of Cloverdale.  Still two weeks ahead of us.

Really nice level and beautiful trail after lunch.  Fantastic views.  Then a long down hill trail overlooking the James River.  Beautiful.  Got to Matts Creek Shelter which was really great, but decided to go on.  There were little fish in the creek there.  Went the distance to the James River - 2 1/2 miles - real fast.

At the road along the James River we got a ride to the Snowden post office.  Snowden consists of Williams Store and combination post office and gas station, with 3 houses nearby.  That's it!  Tried to use the phone there to call Bill West.  Wouldn't let us, so we went to a house nearby and called.  Got Helen at home.  Said he'd get us around 6pm.  He got there around 7.  Was held up at work.

Went to Lynchburg.  Bought steaks, potatoes, etc, and got to Bill's house where he barbecued them for us.  A local scout master came by and talked with us all.  Great dinner.  Really nice people.
