Day 49 - Thursday, May 9, 1974 - Damascus, Virginia

0.0 miles

Had a fantastic time last night.  We all sat around and sang along while Jim played guitar and sang and Bno played his banjo.  The rest of us played spoons or beer cans and Rick B. played washboard.  We were really getting off on it all.  Later, a bunch of local guys came by and one brought his guitar.  He was really good.  So Bno and this guy played together and we all sang and Rick B. got into the Jew's harp.  This lasted until close to 2 AM.  It was really fantastic.

Got up this morning a little drowsy and a little hung over.  Mona had to get up at 5:30 to go to work and didn't get to bed until 2 AM.  Had breakfast at the Star Restaurant.  Went food shopping, postcard shopping and general looking around.

Rick and Ted went to Bristol, 24 miles away to go to the outdoor equipment store there.  They were gone from 1 PM to 8 PM.  So I sat around all afternoon writing post cards and letters, listening to records, and talking with Matt.  Had chili and rice for dinner.  Gloria left this afternoon.  Jim left in the morning.  The rest of us are staying and we picked up 3 more hikers.  Ted, Rick and I went down town this evening and did a bit more shopping and stopped at the Star for cokes.  Rick and I did some more cards tonight.  Got to bed quite late, again.

[Turns out that Jim went on to have a successful career as a singer-songwriter and extensive hiker after his AT hike.  He was quite well known in hiker circles, went by the name of Walkin' Jim Stoltz.  He was quite new to backpacking on this hike, too, but he was able to find a way to use his talents and passion for hiking to create a life that allowed for both to be explored extensively.  I did get to reconnect with him about 15 years ago when he was in Freeport Maine to present a multi-media concert/slide show.  Unfortunately, Jim died in 2010 at the age of 57.  http://missoulanews.bigskypress.com/IndyBlog/archives/2010/09/06/montanas-walkin-jim-stoltz-dies-at-57]
