I woke up with a sore throat this morning. A nice day starting up. Didn't go to the Star for breakfast. Had some donuts and bananas at the house instead. Went to the laundromat and called home. Talked with Dad about film. Got that settled after a half hour. He is ordering 20 rolls and sending 10 to me.
Sent my old walking stick home. [This stick was something that I picked up in the woods on one of our first days on the trail. I broke a bit off of it when I slipped and fell on the day we went into Wesser NC, but it was still very serviceable. To send it home, I took it to the post office and tied a label on it with address and postage. About half of it made it home. I still have it - it serves as a rod for a wall hanging of the AT that my Mom made for me years ago.] I now have a bamboo stick.
Left the house around 11 AM and stopped at the Dairy King for lunch. Played the juke box. McCartney. Started up hill out of town at noon. Very hot and humid and sunny today. We are soft and lazy from our 3 days in Damascus. Went through Laurel Gorge and into Taylors Valley around 3:30/4:00. Stopped to talk with a couple by a trailer near the railroad tracks. Gave us water. They sent us over to a guy camped near the river to find out about the cabin we wanted to stay at. He told us it wasn't open for use and invited us to stay with him and his grandson and granddaughter-in-law. So we got our packs, and 4 trout from the couple by the trailer and settled in by the river.
There were 2 bunks with foam on them for us with a plastic sheet for an awning cover. Expecting rain tonight. The guy is Ivey Moore, a 4th great nephew of Daniel Boone. He is featured in John Steinbeck's book "America and Americans" and has had his picture in many publications and has been featured in stories on TV. Next April he and 2 other guys are going to kick off 500 mile hike re-enacting Daniel Boone's journey from North Carolina over the mountains, never to return. They will be wearing Buckskin, coonskin hats, etc. A very interesting guy, really friendly, and young in spirit. He's 72, looks about 50, and acts 20. Real outdoors man: fishes, hikes, etc., especially up in Canada.

Ivey cooked our fish and some french fries and toast. Real good supper. He went fishing afterwards and I followed him with my camera. Didn't catch anything, unfortunately. Started raining. Went to the store a half mile away. The people in Taylors Valley want to build a shelter near where we are camped.
Ivey said that Matt, Ted, Gloria and others from Damascus stayed with him last night. He was really impressed with Gloria it seems. Always talking about her. Calls her Queenie. Seven people in all. Also met Leo. We are falling behind, but enjoying it.
