Day 56 - Thursday, May 16, 1974 - Pearisburg, VA

0.0 miles

What happened when we got to Pearisburg, you may be wondering?  We walked around a while through the deserted street after talking with a guy who got off the bus here, too.  We wanted to find a place to wait for sunrise.  So we ended up going to the Police Department.  We knocked on the door and asked if we could sit on the front steps.  No problem.  So we sat a while, watching as trucks went roaring through.  Noisy.  Soon the guy who answered the door opened it again and asked us if we'd like to come in and sleep downstairs, and have some coffee.  So we had a couple of cups with him and talked about things.  Then he took us downstairs and put us in an empty jail cell with two bunks.  There were no prisoners in the adjacent cells.  Said he'd bring us breakfast, too.

So we laid there talking in jail and soon dozed off.  The next thing we knew, at 6AM, two guys came down with breakfast for us.  Eggs, bacon, toast and coffee.  Not bad for a prison breakfast and free, too.

We left after breakfast and had coffee in a restaurant, then waited for the Post Office to open. Got our mail and we went to the house of Miss Mary Finley to stay tonight.  We had read about her in Ed Garvey's book.  Woke her up.  She's not really taking hikers in right now, but she decided she could accommodate us.  A real nice older lady.

I went to the library and checked on some books on the Appalachian Trail.  Rick slept.  We went to lunch and washed clothes.  Called home tonight.  Back on the trail tomorrow.
